Hammer Hill Road Sports Ground

Opened in 1996, this sports ground and swimming pool complex is popular in the summer months. If your children like the idea of playing with jets of water coming out from the mouth of a sea serpent, they will not be disappointed with the colorful fountains and slides. There is an indoor training pool with a pirate ship, and an outdoor leisure pool with animal-shaped slides and water guns.

Hong Kong Park

This eight-hectare park has a conservatory housing unusual and exotic plants, sports and squash centers, a multi-storey playground, a tai chi garden and a clock tower. In the conservation corner are more than 100 species of dragonfly. Although the morning bird-watching area has been closed owing to avian flu, you can still visit the Flagstaff House Museum of Teaware and the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre.

Hong Kong Zoological And Botanical Gardens

Located on Victoria Peak, this garden is over a hundred years old. There are more than 1,000 plant species in the garden, indigenous to tropical and sub-tropical regions. There is also a zoological side of the garden housing birds, mammals and reptiles. Take a walk in the greenhouse (open 9am-4:30pm), or visit the fountain terrace garden (open 6am-10pm) and children's playground. Admission is free.

Jumpin' Gym

The Whampoa Garden venue is one of Jumping Gym's 55 branches in town. There are amusement games such as Frog Hoppers, Cartoon Swing Trains, Super Roundabouts and Bumper Cars. You can either get a Smart Card, which is a pre-paid card that can be later used for withdrawing e-tokens, or simply buy tokens for $2 each. The gifts for redemption vary every few months.

Kowloon Walled City Park

This park is divided into eight landscaped areas that encompass many relics of the old Kowloon Walled City, once exempt from Hong Kong law and a hotbed of triad activity. The original South Gate, stone inscriptions and old wells are still there, and you can trace the history of this fascinating slice of old Hong Kong through signboards around the park.

Lai Chi Kok Park

This unusual, Lingnan-style park organizes an arts funfair on Sundays and holidays, which displays art from Hong Kong's rising artists. With 50 stalls selling sculptures, clay pieces and handicrafts, it's fun and educational. Don't miss the brick carvings, which depict the heroes from The Water Margin and The Eight Immortals Crossing The Sea.

Lok On Pai Siu Lam Flea Market

This flea market has more than 100 stalls selling pot plants, dolls, goldfish, bags, glasses and T-shirts. After plenty of retail therapy, take the kids to the children's playground, then spend the afternoon cooking a barbeque in a roofed area with a sea view. For $68 per person, you can stay until 2am on weekends. The website is only in Chinese.

Sai Kung Outdoor Recreational Centre

Children can try their hand at archery, basketball, rock-climbing and cycling, among other activities. There is also a barbecue site, a rope course and a canteen. Children are encouraged to play and run wild in the huge garden area, and although you must book in advance it is inexpensive and an extremely worthwhile day out. Alternatively, you can stay overnight and make a weekend of it.

An indoor playground dedicated to everyone's favorite beagle. See how the Peanuts character lives in Snoopy House, attends school at the Peanuts Academy, plays baseball in Peanuts Dugout, daydreams on Party Pavilion, and finally finds his way to the Peanuts Boulevard. Go shopping in the New Town Plaza, and the receipt from anything you buy that day gets you free entrance to the Boating Canalicanoe Ride.
