This is a medium-to-difficult trail in the southeast corner of Lantau that offers a wide variety of scenery from jungle trails to traditional villages. Cycle the coastal trail from Mui Wo to Chi Ma Wan followed by the extension trail and return the same way, or ride the coastal trail and the full Chi Ma Wan Trail (ignoring the extension), stop for a meal in Pui O and then either cycle over the hill back to Mui Wo or take a taxi.

Lantau South Country Park

This is an easy, hidden trail from just above Pui O beach to Kau Lin Kung. Ride along a water catchment road, with great views of Sunset and Lantau peaks, past Cheung Sha and Tung Fuk beaches on the south side. The trail passes the Shek Pik Reservoir, runs through a Chinese fir woodland and Tai Long Wan village, where there is the Fung Ancestral Hall.

Plover Cove Reservoir

Pleasure Cove Reservoir is the most popular leisure biking trail in Hong Kong. It starts off adjacent to the main road in the busy center of Sha Tin, continuing on to the outskirts of the district and into Tai Po. At Tai Mei Tuk, the trail runs along the reservoir wall, which is particularly spectacular at sunset.

Sai Kung West Country Park

Great for novice mountain bikers, this relatively easy trail passes through Hoi Ha village and leads to Wan Tsai headland. The terrain is ideal for learning off-road techniques as it includes dirt trails, grass, rocks and gravel. The route offers good views of mainland China and takes about two hours one way.

Shek O Country Park

This moderately difficult but very scenic mountain-bike trail on Hong Kong Island takes cyclists through wild shrubs, bamboo groves and forests along the Dragon's Back. Along the way are breathtaking views of Clearwater Bay to the east and Stanley to the west. Some of the route is paved.

Tai Lam Country Park

A challenging route for experienced mountain bikers, this trail starts at West Tai Mo Shan and leads to Tai Lam Chung. On the way are tree-lined tracks, downhill drop-offs, stream crossings and some pretty strenuous climbs. Usually takes three to four hours, but it can be completed in two if you really push yourself and don't stop to take in the views.

Tai Mo Shan

This predominantly downhill route is a favorite among mountain bikers. Avoid carrying your bike up and down the steps at the official starting point by taking a shortcut a couple of hundred meters down Route Twisk toward Shek Kong: just before the road bends right, turn left down a slippery dirt trail behind a metal crash barrier. At Ho Pui Reservoir, you have two options: take a steep right-hand turn down a spur to the eastern side of the reservoir, or continue along a 3km contour trail that concludes at the western side of the reservoir and offers stunning views.
