Tai Po Kau Forest Nature Reserve

term:
Nature Parks

It's a jungle out there. Once home to tigers, Tai Po Kau has some of the densest subtropical forest in Hong Kong, thanks to a plantation begun in 1926 and protection since 1946. There's a good, color-coded system of trails for all abilities, a picnic area beside a small dam, burbling streams, and some of the best woodland birdwatching in the territory. There's other wildlife here: troupes of macaques, butterflies, red land crabs, skinks and spiders. The lack of barbecue pits seems to keep the number of visitors down, which means more peace and quiet for you.

address:
Off the old Tai Po Highway. Bus 72 from Sha Tin New Town Plaza, or taxi from KCR East Rail Tai Po Market Station.
